History and Architecture of St. Sebastian’s Church

The origins of St. Sebastian’s Church date back centuries, when Portuguese missionaries first brought Catholicism to the western coast of Sri Lanka in the 16th century. The original structure was modest, built to serve a small but growing congregation. As Negombo’s Catholic community expanded dramatically over the following centuries, a grander church was needed.

The foundation stone of the current building was laid on 2 February 1936 by the Archbishop of Colombo, Pierre-Guillaume Marque. Construction took ten years, and the church was finally completed in 1946. It was designed by Father G. Gannon, the parish priest of Sea Street at the time, who drew inspiration from the great Gothic cathedrals of Europe — most notably the famous Reims Cathedral in France.

The result is a stunning example of Gothic Revival architecture: soaring twin towers, pointed arches, a dramatic façade, and a scale that feels almost unexpected in a coastal Sri Lankan city. The building replaced the earlier, smaller church that could no longer accommodate the faithful, and today it remains one of the finest examples of colonial religious architecture in the country.

What to See Inside St. Sebastian’s Church

Step inside and the church reveals a richly decorated interior that rewards close attention. The walls are adorned with intricate frescoes and religious paintings, depicting scenes from the Bible and the life of Saint Sebastian. The craftsmanship reflects a tradition of devotion that has been carefully maintained and restored over generations.

Among the highlights is the magnificent collection of stained glass windows, each one telling a story through vivid colour and detail. Light filters through these panels throughout the day, casting an ever-changing atmosphere inside the nave.

The church also houses one of the oldest pipe organs in Sri Lanka, dating back to the early 20th century — a rare and beautifully preserved instrument that is still in use today.

The most important event in the church’s calendar is the Feast of St. Sebastian, celebrated each year on 20 January. The feast draws thousands of pilgrims and devotees from across Sri Lanka, filling the streets around the church with processions, prayer, and celebration.
